Pre-Requisites required: DDS Foundations of Dental Sleep Medicine Course or CE Equivalent with Passing Score on DDS Foundations Exam.
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe upper and lower airway anatomy, the mechanisms of breathing during sleep, and the types of sleep-related breathing disorders, including obstructive, central and complex sleep apnea.
- Compare sleep study reports from polysomnography and Type 3 and Type 4 home sleep tests, and interpret AHI, RDI, REI and ODI from a sleep physician’s perspective.
- Perform a consistent dental sleep exam, including health history risk factors, chairside airway assessment, dental signs of sleep-disordered breathing, and TMJ and range-of-motion screening.
- Explain the AASM and AADSM recommendations and the standard of care for oral appliance therapy, identify contraindications, and select an appropriate appliance design and material.
- Take an accurate construction bite, deliver an oral appliance, apply an evidence-based titration protocol, and plan objective efficacy testing and lifelong follow-up.
- Prevent, recognize and manage the side effects of oral appliance therapy.
- Establish a team-based screening protocol and use plain-language, permission-based conversations that support referral and case acceptance.
- Document oral appliance therapy with SOAP notes and physician letters, build working relationships with physicians, and describe medical insurance and Medicare billing paths.
- Integrate these skills in a complete patient case, from screening and referral through treatment, documentation and long-term care.
